Adsorbate Assisted Adsorption
- The impact scenario shown on the right hand site is more efficient than the one depicted on the left hand side.
- At large impact energies an increase of the adsorption probability with coverage has been observed. In the standard model, the increase in S with coverage is explained by the increased efficiency of the energy transfer with increasing coverage. Due to the mass-mismatch the efficiency of the energy accommodation process increases with coverage simply because it becomes more than likely that a molecule hits a surface site already occupied by other molecules. The better the mass-match the better the energy transfer, i.e., the larger the adsorption probability. The result that this effect is most distinct at large impact energies and less distinct at higher surface temperatures supports the adsorbate assisted adsorption (auto-catalytic adsorption) model.
